From May 21 to September 27, 2026 I drove a Toyota Hilux with a camper unit solo from Ivrea to Mongolia and back: the Balkans, Turkey, the Caucasus, the Kazakh steppe, the mountains of Kyrgyzstan, the Gobi desert and, on the way home, the Silk Road through Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan. I documented every stage with photos and video.

Next expedition in the making
The first expedition is done and documented: 89 days solo, from Ivrea to Mongolia and back. Now I'm preparing the next one, and I'm looking for brands and partners to build it with from day one, from the vehicle to the content.

About Me
My name is Nicholas Antignolo, a 34-year-old Italian architect.
I decided to change direction and embark on an independent overland expedition from Europe to Asia, reaching Mongolia, traveling exclusively by land in a pickup truck with a living cell, in complete self-sufficiency.
Through Nick Overlander, I document every phase of the project — from the technical preparation of the vehicle to the daily challenges encountered along the way — with a practical and realistic approach, far from pre-packaged tourism formats.
The project aims to show that a journey of this kind does not require heroism, but preparation, simplification, and the ability to adapt.

The rig
A Toyota Hilux and a camper unit: home, office and travel companion for almost 34,000 km.
Toyota Hilux
The vehicle that carried me through the whole expedition: from European motorways to steppe tracks, from the sand of the Gobi to the mountain passes of Central Asia.
Camper unit
On the bed, a fully equipped camper unit: my space to sleep, cook, work and live independently, even in the most remote places.
Power on board
A service battery powers the fridge, lighting, computer and photo and video gear. While driving it is recharged through a DC-DC system, backed up by the solar panel.
Put to the test
33,965 km across Europe and Asia, on tarmac, gravel, sand and mountain tracks.
The journey tested every part of the vehicle. Shock absorbers, rims, electrical system, battery, DC-DC, AdBlue system and the camper unit itself all needed attention or repairs along the way, but no problem ever stopped the expedition.
In the end, Hilux and camper unit made it home on their own wheels.
